FAQS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Golden Shed is an installation created by the artist Harry Cory Wright. You are invited to create your own artwork using some of the 600 small pieces of wood that Harry has shaped, coloured and polished. When you have made something you like, there is a photo both inside the shed so you can photograph the work. You can buy a print of what you have made to take away with you. There is also the opportunity to have Harry make and frame the actual piece you have made.
It is a very calm space indeed. You sit at a work bench and select the pieces you might work with from the shelves in front of you. The lighting is designed to show the colours of the pieces of to their best advantage, and there is a quiet and engaging sound track to listen to by the artist Alex Howard. You have full voloume control.
We have been told that this is a particularly unthreatening creative process, so in that sense, yes, it’s easy. As you begin to choose which pieces you might place on your board, you start on a simple journey. You might find yourself picking up a piece for no reason but as soon as you place it next to another piece, the two begin a visual relationship that is as simple or as complicated as you like. And so the process of making an artwork begins.
We would like to think that everyone will enjoy being in The Golden Shed. It is aimed at adults but there is no doubt that children of all ages enjoy making artwork here.
This is the fourth time that the shed has been presented as an art installation. Previously it was painted a deep, warm orange colour. This time, as it is part of Harry’s art residency at Monica Vinader’s jewellery studios… it’s painted gold. The location of Langlands, Holkham where the shed is set up in the middle of the courtyard, has a very fine and recently restored clock tower. The clock numbers, the hands and the weather vane are gold.
