OPENS 12TH JUNE
HOLKHAM

invites you into an
artistic experience
THE ALCHEMY OF YOUR IDEAS INTO ART
The Golden Shed is an immersive art installation set within the beautiful courtyard at Longlands, Holkham. Book it for an hour to have the place to yourself or for up to six.
Step inside to discover six hundred small painted wooden pieces arranged across the shelves. Each one is unique, varying in colour, shape and tone, and represents a visual fragment of the local Norfolk landscape.
Through a peaceful and engaging process, visitors are invited to explore what happens as they arrange their chosen pieces together on the coloured boards provided, layering two, three or more pieces at a time.
You are encouraged to create your own arrangement that becomes a simple visual dialogue, exploring the relationships between basic elements of landscape. As you dive in to colours and shapes you may discover how the compositions you make can reflect personal experiences of being deep within the Norfolk landscape.
Harry has described the process as a wordless activity and a gentle but expansive soundtrack specially curated by artist Alex Howard accompanies you while you put things together.
In this tardis-like space, head out on a journey to discover that 'what’s outside is, for this moment, within'.

TO CREATE ARTWORK UNIQUELY YOUR OWN
Rather like when we go for a walk, we might feel immersed in a landscape, allowing ourselves to entertain a variety of thoughts, patterns and ideas that drift in and out of our consciousness. It is the same inside the shed, where each piece has the capacity to take you on a slight shift of direction, a journey within a journey.
You can make photographs of your work as you go along using the system we have set up inside the shed. You just place your piece on in the slot provided and press the shutter. All your pictures will be shown to you on a screen in the studio at the end of your session and you can choose if you want to have a print made.
The prints are made on a fine Japanese paper that particularly suits this work. You can have them made to A4 or A3 or you can ask Harry to construct and frame the actual piece you have made as a physical relief work. The prints are numbered, with number one being the first print we made from The Golden Studio. Each print can be signed below the picture on one side by yourself and on the other with the HCW studio stamp mark.

An example of a finished A4 print with two signatures.
Sometimes… when the shed is full of people of all ages, all abilities, artists and non artists, when they have all left, and we look at the work they have created, every single piece that has been made catches our eye. They are all full of ideas, colours, questions and maybe answers. But we have no idea who... did what. It's a lovely thing.
